- I just signed up for a continuing-education class ("Marketing You & Your Product") and I'm going to a free continuing-ed seminar ("Low-Cost marketing Strategies"). I recently helped a photographer edit his portfolio and add text to his images to shop them around to local ad agencies; he appreciated my insight. So I've been kicking around the idea of becoming an art marketing consultant. Whether I advance in that vein or not, though, I think the class and seminar would be helpful in marketing my art and jewelry, and my overall work skills.
That sounds great! Continuing ed classes are a great way to keep busy when you're not working. I always tell my unemployed clients to look busy! Take a class, do some volunteer work, anything to show future employers that you weren't just sitting on your a$$. Also, these are all great ways of networking...something you'll learn a lot more about when you take the marketing courses...then you can teach me. I suck at networking. | |

| ^^ For me, and maybe for many introverts, networking really goes against the grain. It's not a shyness thing so much as "I am taking in and processing information, can't chat right now," lol. And especially when you've seen people be totally transparent about networking (i.e. openly angling to use someone), you loathe the idea. But I try to look at it a couple other ways: 1) Meeting new people invites serendipity to assist in success, and I like leaving room for those unexpected strokes of luck; 2) People actually really like to help. It confirms that we're all in a position to do at least some good. It satisfies our charitable sides and our egos at once. Speaking of networking, I think that's a good side-reason to go to the bead studio workshop held on Friday mornings at the bead shop near me. | |

| ^^ Thanks. Yep, I was thinking of you when I first came to the realization that I needed to go further with this. So now I need to learn how to market my knowledge; hopefully somewhere along the line I'll get better at marketing the things I make, too. Still, though, I crave the security of a full-time thing. Really hoping I get the Program Coordinator job I applied for (with the United Arts Council of Raleigh & Wake Co.). They're taking applications through Friday, so theoretically they'll start making decisions after that. | |

| I'm finally done with my take home final (and so completely done with that class!) and now only have a few hours to go before I'm done, packed, and on my way home!
Only about 3.5 months and I'll be in Europe! |

| My boss said I was a superstar today because I've been doing really well at work. I never got praise like that at a job before. | |

| QueenB: Ah good -- hope it was a good weekend. Diva: About time someone recognized that and told you! I haven't heard anything like that in a long time. I think the last time was summer of '05, when we had so much work coming in that I worked through lunches, and got a bonus from all we were taking in. Ah, we sold some of our most beautiful engravings that summer... lots of Edmund Blair Leighton works. | |

| My financial aid is beginning to transfer into my account. Now, I just have to wait until that finishes, transfer it to my paypal account, convert it, and then pay for my programs. |

| I might have a job soon! Within the same sign co. G is with, but a different branch. They need someone up front to take orders, process invoices, keep the books, etc. I worked at a sign shop years ago ('99-'00), but a lot has changed since then in terms of technology. If I get this, I really hope I can learn fast. They're good folks; I don't want to let them down. No bens, and the pay might not be so great, but hey, if it's better than my current situation I've got to take it. In related news, my potential future boss is really cute. Like a shorter version of Adrien Brody but with glasses. I'd better get over it in a hurry -- he ran his hand through his hair at one point during the interview and for a moment I didn't hear a word he said. He's also refreshingly honest and positive; what a change that will be. | |

| Not sure if it's going to pan out yet -- but thanks Diva and QueenB. edit: Just in case it doesn't I've arranged an interview at a medical spa on Friday morning. It's a part-time position (25 hrs), front desk, but the pay is actually pretty good. It could give me just enough financial security and free time to more earnestly pursue freelance art and consulting work. | |
